For each type of road, lighting categories have been defined from the beginning, as well as evaluation criteria for road traffic : luminosity levels and uniformity of the road surface, lighting of peripheral zones ; reduction of luminosity, if it is perturbing or uncomfortable and direct visual guidance.
As far as pedestrians are concerned, estimations showed that lighting should allow for them to distinguish any obstacle or dangerous movement on their way, offensive or not, coming for example from other pedestrians. For this purpose, the lighting of horizontal or vertical surfaces and the control of luminosity seemed crucial. Numerous devices have been introduced following the topology of the current electricity network.
