THE ROLE OF THE EUROPEAN UNION FOR OUR CAPITALS : REALITIES AND PERSPECTIVES
Europe Metropoles Network, the European People’s Party (EPP) and the EPP Group in the Committee of the Regions (EPP/CoR) jointly organised the 30th january 2008 the European meeting of EPP local councillors in Brussels. It brought together over 70 European representatives and regional elected officials from capital cities in order to exchange best practices and draw inspiration from each other.

General presentation

Founded in 2004 by a group of local representatives across Europe including both local and regional officials and regional administrative staff, Europe Metropoles is an association under French law, with international collegiate administration. Europe Metropoles aims specifically to build up a broad network of confirmed Europeans and players in regional communities Europe-wide, comprising men and women who share the democratic values of economic freedom and social justice, enshrined in the European ideal. Every member’s contribution to the making of Europe will be proof of their commitment.

In brief
At the request of the European Council in June 2007, the Intergovernmental Conference (IGC) 2007 drew up a new Reform Treaty to enable the EU to face the challenges of the 21st century and realise its true potential. This Treaty focuses on the EU’s need for modernisation and reform.

Reactions
Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner appeared, on 1 February, before the Committee on Regional Development at the European Parliament in Brussels.
